Sri Lanka, one amongst 35 bio-diversity regions on earth, is a remarkable country for birding. It hosts over 435 species of birds including an amazing 33 endemics. Sri Lanka an island of the Indian Ocean is 433km long from north to south and only 224km at its widest. Today Sri Lanka is considered one of the most bio-diverse areas in South Asia. The hill country rises a little south of the center of the island and is surrounded by a coastal plain. The flat north-central and northern plain extends from the hill country all the way to the northern tip of the island this region is much drier than the rest of the island.

Day 1: Arrival – Kitulgala
Arrival Colombo Airport and transfer to Kitulgala. Evening birding at Kitulgala Rain Forest.

Overnight stay at Kitulgala

Birds: Sri Lanka Spurfowl, Sri Lanka junglefowl, Crested Goshawk, Besra, Rufous-bellied Eagle, Mountain Hawk Eagle, Sri Lanka Green Pigeon, Sri Lanka Hanging Parrot, Layard’s Parakeet, Red-faced Malkoha, Green-billed Coucal, Sri Lanka Frogmouth, Serendib Scops Owl, Chestnut-backed Owlet, Dollarbird, Oriental Dwarf Kingfisher, Malabar Trogon, Yellow-fronted Barbet, Crimson-fronted Barbet, Sri Lanka Grey Hornbill, Crimson-backed Goldenback, Indian Pitta, Black-naped Monarch, Sri Lanka Blue Magpie, Sri Lanka Swallow, Black-capped Bulbul, Black Bulbul, Green Warbler, Large-billed Leaf Warbler,Brown-capped Babbler.

Day 2: Kitulgala
Morning birding around Kitulgala. After breakfast visit to Kitulgala rain forest.

Overnight stay at Kitulgala

Birds: Sri Lanka Scimitar Babbler, Dark-fronted Babbler, Orange-billed Babbler, Velvet-fronted Nuthatch, Sri Lanka myna, Spot-winged Thrush, Indian blue Robin, Asian Brown Flycatcher, Brown-breasted Flycatcher, Tickell’s Blue Flycatcher, Legge’s Flowerpecker.

Day 3: Nuwara Eliya
Morning birding at Kitulgala. Afternoon proceed to Nuwara Eliya. Birding at Hagala Botanical Gardens

Overnight stay at Nuwara Eliya.

Day 4: Nuwara Eliya
Morning birding at Horton Plains. Evening birding at Victoria park

Overnight stay Nuwara Eliya.

Birds : Sri Lanka Junglefowl, Common Kestrel, Black-winged Kite, Jerdon’s Baza, Common Buzzard, Black Eagle, Mountain Hawk Eagle, Sri Lanka Wood Pigeon, Crimson-backed Goldenback, Sri Lanka Blue Magpie, Pacific Swallow, Forest Wagtail, Gray Wagtail, Yellow-eared Bulbul, Sri Lanka White-eye, Sri Lanka Bush Warbler, Large-billed Leaf Warbler, Sri Lanka Scimitar Babbler

Day 5: Singharaja
Morning birding around Nuwara Eliya and proceed Singharaja. Evening birding at around Singharaja.

Overnight stay Singharaja.

Birds: Sri Lanka Frogmouth, Serendib Scops Owl, Chestnut-backed Owlet, Malabar Trogon, Yellow-fronted Barbet, Crimson-fronted Barbet, Sri Lanka Grey Hornbill, Crimson-backed Goldenback, Indian Pitta, Biack-naped Monarch, Sri Lanka Drogon, Sri Lanka Blue Magpie, Black-capped Bulbul, Yellow-browed Bulbul, Black Bulbul, Sri Lanka White eye, Green Warbler, Large- Billed Leaf Warbler, Brown-capped Babbler.

Day 7: Singharaja
Full day birding at Singharaja rain forest.

Overnight stay Singharaja.

Birds: Spot-winged Thrush, Sri Lanka Thrush, Indian Blue Robin, Asian Brown Flycatcher, Brown-breasted Flycatcher, Tickell’s Blue Flycatcher, Legge’s Flowerpecker, Black-throated Munia.

Day 8: Your departure.

Note: Extensions to Udawalave, Tissa can be arranged, as well as to other destinations. 

Please note that in Sri Lanka, there would be a peak season supplement for the period 15th December to 10th January.

  • Services of an accompanying birding driver/guide from pick up till drop at the airport
